Prepare to journey back to a world of goblins, magic, and David Bowie's unforgettable hair! Because in 2026, Labyrinth is making a grand return to theaters, and you absolutely don't want to miss it.
Following a year packed with cinematic revivals (everything from Twilight to Back to the Future graced the big screen again), 2026 kicks off with a dose of '80s fantasy. The Jim Henson Company is partnering with Fathom Events to re-release the iconic Labyrinth, giving fans a chance to experience the magic on the big screen once more.
But here's where it gets controversial... Was Labyrinth truly appreciated in its time? Or is its current cult status a testament to its ahead-of-its-time brilliance?
Why now? Well, 2026 marks the film's 40th anniversary (June in the US, December in the UK). To celebrate this milestone, Fathom Events is bringing Labyrinth back for a limited engagement, from January 8th to 11th. This isn't just any screening; audiences will be treated to a stunning 4K restoration of the film. And this is the part most people miss... the re-release also includes a special featurette, a love letter to the film's devoted fanbase, captured at a recent Labyrinth-themed ball in the UK. Talk about immersive!
According to Fathom CEO Ray Nutt, "We are honored to bring this 1986 epic back to theatres from Sony Pictures for its 40th anniversary in this special presentation and provide a brilliant night at the movies for audiences of all ages. The magical combination of Jim Henson, George Lucas, David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly and hundreds of extraordinary creatures and puppets from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop made Labyrinth a landmark fantasy classic, one that is beloved by Fathom Entertainment audiences over the years."
Labyrinth marked Jennifer Connelly's feature film debut, but its initial box office performance in the US was, shall we say, less than stellar. However, across the pond in the UK, the film found significantly more success (Bowie power, perhaps?). Despite the lukewarm initial reception, Labyrinth has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence in popularity thanks to home video and its enduring appeal as a cult classic. Its influence extends beyond the screen, spawning video games, books, and even a sequel comic.
And speaking of sequels, Sony announced plans for a Labyrinth sequel way back in 2016. Progress seemed stalled until January of this year when Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse) was announced as the director. So, while we eagerly await the sequel, this theatrical re-release offers the perfect opportunity to revisit the original.
