Attention sports fans! We've got some incredible swimming action to talk about from the 2025 French Elite Short Course Championships. This event is a crucial stepping stone for French swimmers aiming to represent their nation at the upcoming European Short Course Championships in Lublin, Poland. And boy, did they bring their A-game!
Let's dive right into the highlights of day one.
The Dominance of Maxime Grousset
Our first star of the show is none other than world champion Maxime Grousset. At just 26 years old, he's already making waves (pun intended!). Grousset took on the 100m butterfly and the 100m individual medley, and let me tell you, he owned those races.
In the 100m fly, he clocked an impressive 48.87, leaving the competition in his wake with a lead of over a second. That's some serious speed! Egypt's Youssef Ramadan came in second with a time of 49.91, and fellow Frenchman Clement Secchi took third, finishing in 49.96.
Grousset's split times were incredible, opening with a swift 22.82 and closing with a strong 26.05. He was just a hair away from breaking his own national record of 48.57, which he set at last year's World Championships when he brought home the silver.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Grousset's performance not only secured him a spot on the French team for the European SC Championships but also ranked him as the world's second-fastest swimmer in this event for the season. Some might argue that with such a dominant performance, he should be aiming for the top spot. What do you think?
And this is the part most people miss...
Grousset's success continued in the 100m IM, where he absolutely dominated, clocking an incredible 50.56. His split times of 23.20 and 27.36 were enough to leave the next closest competitor, Nikita Baez, in the dust, with a two-second lead. Tom Remy took the bronze, but Grousset's time was a lifetime best, easily surpassing his previous mark of 51.49 from the 2022 edition of this competition.
With this performance, Grousset has now leapfrogged Florent Manaudou and is now France's second-best 100m IM performer of all time. Only the legendary four-time Olympic champion Leon Marchand has been faster, holding the national and European records with a time of 49.92.
Grousset's dominance raises an interesting question: Can he challenge Marchand's records? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: the competition is heating up!
Other notable performances on day one included Mewen Tomac's gold in the men's 200m backstroke, clocking an impressive 1:50.00. Yohann Ndoye-Brouard and Antoine Herlem followed closely behind, taking silver and bronze, respectively.
In the men's 400m freestyle, Roman Fuchs took the gold, qualifying for the SC Euros, but he wasn't alone. Teenager Sauveur Cristofini put up an impressive performance, setting a new French Age Record and qualifying for Lublin with a time of 3:39.69.
On the women's side, Olympic silver medalist Anastasia Kirpichnikova dominated the 1500m freestyle, clocking an impressive 15:47.44 and qualifying for Lublin.
Analia Pigree took the top spot in the women's 50m backstroke with a time of 26.61, narrowly ahead of the talented 16-year-old Jeanne Lechevalier, who set a new French Age Record with her silver-medal performance. Melanie Henique also landed on the podium, clocking 26.77 for the bronze.
Finally, veteran Olympian Beryl Gastaldello showed her experience in the women's 100m freestyle, splitting 23.20/27.36 to take the top prize. She out-touched Anastasia Urbaniak, who finished just behind in 52.78, with Eloise Riley rounding out the podium in 53.02.
Day one of the 2025 French Elite Short Course Championships was a thrilling display of talent and determination. As we look forward to the remaining days of competition, one thing is certain: these swimmers are leaving nothing to chance in their pursuit of glory.
Stay tuned, sports fans, for more exciting updates from this prestigious event!
