A Revolutionary Step: Uniting Youth for Agricultural Transformation
The Future of Agriculture is Here!
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) took a bold step towards empowering young minds in agriculture by hosting its inaugural Youth in Agrifood Systems Trade Fair Expo. This groundbreaking event, held in Gaborone, Botswana, from October 6-7, 2025, brought together an inspiring group of individuals dedicated to shaping the future of agrifood systems.
A Regional Collaboration
The Expo welcomed 24 youth delegates from 11 SADC Member States, including Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, and more. This diverse representation showcased the region's collaborative spirit and the shared vision for agricultural innovation. With a focus on youth, who are the majority of the population, the event aimed to create sustainable employment opportunities.
Innovations on Display
Over two action-packed days, young agripreneurs demonstrated their entrepreneurial prowess and technical skills. From groundnut processing to feed production and chilli processing, these innovations highlighted the potential for sustainable practices and digital technologies in agriculture. It was a showcase of talent and a testament to the region's commitment to progress.
Government and Diplomatic Support
The Expo received official recognition and support from the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Botswana's Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, solidifying the government's commitment to youth-led initiatives. Additionally, the presence of H.E. Sabdiyo Dido Bashuna, the Kenyan High Commissioner to Botswana, added a layer of continental diplomatic backing, emphasizing the importance of youth-driven agricultural transformation on a broader scale.
Private Sector Engagement
The private sector played a significant role, with local companies and institutions like the Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI) and the Botswana University actively participating. Key representatives from SADC's Directorate of Industrial Development and Trade and the Directorate of Social and Human Capital Development attended, further emphasizing the event's impact on youth empowerment and inclusive economic growth.
Advocating for Annual Events
Youth participants passionately advocated for the Expo to become an annual fixture, rotating among SADC Member States. This proposal aims to enhance regional visibility, foster knowledge exchange, and provide market access for young agripreneurs. Dr. Maxwell Parakokwa, a Senior Programme Officer at the SADC Secretariat, highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration with National Youth Councils and transition towards national youth associations focused on agrifood systems.
Continental Alignment
The Trade Fair Expo aligned with the African Agribusiness Youth Strategy (AAYS), a continental framework designed to support regional and national efforts. By integrating youth agribusiness strategies into National Agricultural Investment Plans (NAIPs) and aligning with Youth Employment Strategies, the event provided a platform for youth to network, share insights, and identify challenges. It laid the foundation for enhanced innovation, enterprise development, and regional cooperation in agrifood systems.
